Salsa Shines & Styling

Salsa Shines 1

Beginners

This class introduces participants to the foundations of salsa dancing, covering rhythms, counting, body movement, footwork, styling, and musicality. It is designed for those who have never danced salsa or are at the beginning of their salsa journey. The class structure includes musicality breakdowns, technique training, and combinations and patterns. It blends Mambo (New York style) and Cuban styles. By the end of the class cycle, participants can expect to understand salsa musicality, feel familiar with its main movements and flow, and feel confident enjoying a salsa song on the dance floor.

Salsa Shines 2/3

Intermediate / Advanced

In this class, we take salsa training a step further by exploring more complex musicality, more challenging body movement, more intricate footwork, and more fluid styling. Participants are expected to be familiar with salsa timing and feel comfortable with their on2 basics. In addition, participants will deepen their understanding of salsa’s history, approaching it as a culture beyond just moves and counts. By the end of the class cycle, participants can expect a deeper overall understanding of salsa music and dance, an expanded vocabulary of movements, and a stronger connection to salsa culture.

What to Bring

Wear bare feet, jazz shoes, or indoor sneakers. After the warm-up, you'll be invited to change into Latin ballroom heels – up to 2.5 inches is recommended for beginners. You will need a tan pair for year end performance. Toes n Taps on Cook Street is a great local option, or try Montreal-based online store Salsa Style.
